Written by teens for teens, "The
Birds, The Bees, and all that Jazz" portrays the conflicts the
word sex presents. The program depicts four girls struggling
to create a presentation about abstinence for a seventh grade
class. In creating their presentation, they cover topics such
as how sex influences advertising and music, the realities of
STDs, and of course, the very real risk of pregnancy. The
information is delivered in a non-preachy, non-judgmental
fashion as the teens themselves struggle with sexual issues.
The target audience, girls ages 13-16, will find this
presentation appealing because they will identify with the
characters' dilemmas. While the program is primarily for
teenagers, adults can benefit from it as well. Parents will
find the program eye-opening as they take a look at an
ordinary teen conversation about sex. A discussion guide,
which includes activities for both audiences, takes the
message to the next level by encouraging conversation and
reflection about the issues raised in the program.
"The Birds, The Bees, and all that Jazz" is available
on videotape and as a script. By using the latter, teens can
be involved by preparing the presentation as a live event. The
benefits of this approach are several. Teens interested in
performing will have a unique opportunity to not only perform,
but to help educate. The audience will see their peers
delivering important information. The performers could also be
used as group discussion leaders. All those involved will take
away valuable messages that will last.
If the
presentation is not performed live, the program maintains its
integrity and impact on video. The video is a performance by
the teens who originally wrote the script. Teens may be used
as discussion leaders to bring in a peer element. Regardless
of the program structure you choose, "The Birds, The Bees, and
all that Jazz" will be a valuable tool in the struggle to
reach teens with healthy messages regarding sexual activity.
